Javier | Javier Velarde
MY NAME IS JAVIER VELARDE (1986), VISUAL ARTIST AND DESIGNER BASED IN PONTONES, A SMALL TOWN IN CANTABRIA, NORTHERN SPAIN.

TRAINED IN FINE ARTS IN MADRID, WITH A PERSONAL PROJECT THAT MOVED BETWEEN PAINTING AND DRAWING, I BEGAN TO EXPLORE THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT THE TEXTILE WORLD OFFERED ME. THUS, AFTER A DEEP STUDY OF SHAPES AND COLOR AND THE INTENTION OF GIVING A UTILITARIAN SENSE TO MY PLASTIC PRODUCTION, I BEGAN A NEW PATH AS A DESIGNER OF CARPETS AND TEXTILES.

Stepping on a carpet or sinking your feet into a piece of artwork

AT A FORMAL LEVEL ALL THIS TRANSLATES INTO A SERIES OF WORKS, MOSTLY ASSEMBLAGES, WHERE FROM THE GAME AS A WAY OF WORKING AND THE BOOK AS A DOMESTIC ELEMENT OF PRETEXT, I CREATE THESE “DOMESTIC NATURES”. BOOKS THAT TWIST, INTERMINGLE, REVEAL AND EXPAND, CREATING MOVEMENTS AND FORMS OF THE NATURAL.
IN 2015 I UNDERTOOK A PROJECT THAT WOULD CONSIST OF TRANSFERRING MY PICTORIAL WORK ON CARPETS, BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THE ARTISTIC AND THE FUNCTIONAL OBJECT.
Always in dialogue with my pictorial production, since then I have worked on collections in which I try to reinterpret languages of nature: layers, strata and veins become artistic accidents. Shapes, surfaces and textures that transcend the domestic sphere to suggest a journey, an experience.
The cultural legacy of handmade carpets from India and Nepal
Always looking for an execution that allows to capture the artistic message to the maximum, I have tried to combine national production with the tradition and legacy of India and Nepal, a contemporary reinterpretation of the artisan heritage. Adding value and accentuating it through a careful and limited production that makes it something unique, exclusive and that lasts over time.
